Older HVAC systems can typlically only operate in "On" or "Off" mode; where the newer variable speed systems can run at any point from 0% up to 100%.

By using built in temperature, humidity and air flow sensors inside and outside of the house, they determine exactly how hard to run under any weather condition which minimizes operating costs while keeping temperatures more even throughout the home and humidity lower in the summer.
