The Mushroom House

I've been doing energy audits in Maryland for over 15 years. I've seen almost every type of home and issue a house can have. Since working with Atlas for the last 10 years, I came across one of the most unique and interesting home's I've ever audited.
The Mushroom House!
Back in February of 2018, I helped train one of our new hires that I had helped bring to Atlas, Shannon, on how to be a successful energy auditor. We both got really lucky on that training day and were able to see the internal workings of a very mystical and magical house in Bethesda, MD, right near the DC borderline. This house is referred to as the "Mushroom House" because of the wavy and smooth-curved exterior walls and roof assembly which resembled a huge mushroom from the outside.
The home's exterior was a composition of polyurethane spray foam, lath and concrete which allowed it to take its unique form. Whimsical stones and stained glass adorned the outside, windows and decorations almost appearing to have a humanistic face, giving it some great character to soak in. Arched doorways, round stone pavers and yard gnomes made me feel like I was in a fantasy land that any hobbit from the Shire would approve of.

We were on the call because the house was experiencing high energy usage from its current owner, and we were on site to help detect and solve the energy usage issues and suggest ways to lower the energy bills.

The internal side of the home was gorgeous, open and beautiful. Tall ceilings resembled the veil/membrane of a mushroom with dotted skylights that allowed beautiful light and ambiance to enter the house. A magical bridge connected living quarters together, with a mushroom-stem inspired support pillar to whimsically gaze up at. Textured and round, light colored internal walls allowed the energy to flow easily through the home, you didn't feel boxed in but more open and free. An absolutely beautiful home.

I was hoping the internal mechanics of the home were just as enchanting as the interior/extior, but instead of mystical, God-like inventions that humans have never seen before, we came across just the ordinary run of the mill HVAC, ductwork and water heating systems. The home was heated with a standard radiant boiler and forced AC system, with your basic electric water heating storage tanks. Heating and cooling is generally a home's #1 utility expense, followed by water heating and typically, the attic space is the first place to look at when making a house more energy efficient and comfortable. Since this was the mushroom house though, it had no attic space! The entire building envelope was the composite mixture of spray foam, lath and concrete.

We are professionals here though, and are equipped with many solutions for every unique house. There were still some great opportunities to investigate and correct to help keep the high energy usage demands lower. We ended up recommending Aeroseal duct sealing which is the best service upgrade on the market to make your entire duct system as air-tight as possible, it can even find disconnected ductwork which is a major energy drain on a home. It's best to clean your ducts first though so you get the optimal seal rate for Aeroseal, so that was paired up with our recommendations along with a few door weather stripping projects.
As Atlas Home Energy Solutions grows - so does our talented staff and product offerings. Today - I would recommend an elite HVAC upgrade by Bryant, the Evolution series HVAC systems, which handle moisture and humidity extremely well while delivering top notch comfort, consistently throughout the day at a very efficient cost. We could also pair up an Emporia energy monitor to read real-time how much each individual circuit breaker is pulling to see if there are any hidden energy drains on the home. Replacing the standard electric water heating tanks with heat pump water heaters will use 1/4 the energy, and we could give a professional survey and free consultation on installing solar power and battery backup systems for the home.
If it has been a while since you have had Atlas at your house or never at all, it may be worth it to give us a call at 301-364-5055 to check in on the latest offerings and increasing rebates from your utility provider that you can access. Rising energy costs, inflation and extreme weather temperatures are not going away, the best time to upgrade your home was yesterday, the next best time is today!
