My First Energy Audit

2026-05-04

In 2013, I was a newly certified BPI Envelope professional, fresh off training with our owner, Matt. Up to that point, my experience was strictly limited to "test houses" and watching others give presentations. That changed one May morning when it was finally time for me to lead my first audit with Matt shadowing me.

We pulled up to the house in Matt’s 1993 Honda Accord (pictured above). It had no Atlas logo and a giant rusted dent on the side. But our entire toolkit, including a blower door, infrared camera, combustion testing gear, and a four-foot ladder, was crammed into the trunk. Things were a little different back then, and the homeowner was skeptical the moment we stepped out of the car.

"Do you have everything you need?" he asked, eyeing the small white sedan. I froze, but Matt stepped in to assure him we were fully equipped.

Then, it was my turn to step up to the plate. I stumbled through a half-remembered introduction before starting the home tour. That’s where things went sideways. The homeowner began showing me parts of the house that weren't relevant to the audit, and when he asked why we weren't focusing on those areas, I couldn't explain myself. When he challenged me on why he should prioritize air sealing and insulation over new windows, I didn't have the answer.

Eventually, the homeowner decided he’d had enough of "amateur hour" and began directing his questions solely to Matt. Matt had to use every bit of his experience to salvage the visit. We finished the inspection, which confirmed the home desperately needed insulation and air sealing to improve its comfort.

That day taught me a vital lesson: technical knowledge is only half the battle. You have to be prepared, confident, and able to communicate the why behind the work.

Today at Atlas Home Energy Solutions, we’ve turned that lesson into a standard. Our training involves 6 weeks of shadowing and classroom time, and hours of video education because one of our core values is Striving to learn and teach. That learning doesn't stop once an auditor goes solo; we provide continuing education for everyone, from our newest hires to our most veteran staff.

As for that first customer? He chose to replace his windows back in 2013. But ten years later... in 2023, he finally called us back to air seal and insulate his home. It was a reminder that we are, first and foremost, educators. Sometimes it takes time for a homeowner to be ready, and we’ll be here when they are.
