Helping Customers Any Way We Can

2026-04-03

As a part of the Leads Department, one of my main functions is to field homeowner queries arriving at Atlas via telephone and email regarding our energy efficiency exams and contracting capabilities.  These potential customers invariably experience high power bills and/or comfort issues in their homes and seek free estimates for energy efficiency improvements such as air sealing, duct sealing (Aeroseal), insulation, and HVAC upgrades.

Although Atlas always provides free estimates and competitive pricing, many customers are unaware of significant rebates for these improvements offered through the EmPower Maryland program, which provides partially subsidized Home Performance Energy Audits during an estimate.

In October 2025, I received a cold call regarding these services from a Frederick homeowner.  Her home, built in 1978, had significant shortfalls in attic insulation and a 15-year-old heat pump that had not been maintained and was failing.

Although the rebates from EmPower Maryland are significant, (in some cases up to $10,000.00 or more), it became clear to me during our discussion that this potential customer had a very fixed income and might not be able to afford to make these upgrades on her own. I needed to dig deeper to figure out how we could help her.

It occurred to me that she would be a good candidate for Frederick County's Power Saver Retrofit Program (PSR), which is an energy efficiency grant program provided to Frederick County low- and middle-income residents.  I’m proud to say that Atlas has been the primary energy efficiency contractor supporting this program for over 10 years. I encouraged her to apply and notified Ms. Lindsey Humphrey, who manages the PSR program, of this customer’s likely qualification.

I then dispatched our Energy Auditor, Mr. Kris Canning, to perform the intake appointment and Energy Audit, which was now free of charge.  She graciously took the time to review Kris's performance on Google, reporting he was "very patient with me when I asked numerous questions and explained things to me very thoroughly.”

The end result of all of this was amazing. The customer received over $19,000.00 in energy efficiency improvements at NO COST because of the PSR Program. And I was proud to have played a part in making her home significantly more comfortable, sustainable, and energy efficient.
