Energy Star for Homes

ENERGY STARŪ for Homes

ENERGY STAR Label for Electical Panel

The ENERGY STAR Homes
Electrical Box Label

The ENERGY STAR for Homes program was developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE) to help facilitate an improvement in the energy efficiency of residential buildings. An ENERGY STAR qualified new home is at least 15% more energy efficient than a code built home, but typically are 20-30% more efficient because of the inclusion of additional energy-saving features.

To qualify a new home for the program, an independent Home Energy Rater must complete a review of the energy efficient features of the proposed home, inspect insulation and HVAC systems, and conduct performance testing of key building components to verify that the home meets ENERGY STAR requirements.

Atlas Home Energy Solutions reviews building plans for ENERGY STAR Compliance and provides blower door testing, duct leakage testing, and thermal bypass checklist inspection services to ENERGY STAR builders and architects.

HERS Ratings

The Residential Energy Services Network, RESNET, developed the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) for use by the mortgage industry to evaluate and compare the energy efficiency of residential homes. HERS ratings are used to qualify homeowners for "Green Loans", Energy Efficient Mortgages (EEMs), and for the EPA's ENERGY STAR Program.

There is a move in the housing industry by builders and existing home owners to have their homes rated so that the home's HERS Rating can be marketed to prospective buyers.

Testing, Inspection and Design Services

Building codes are becoming increasingly concered with the energy performance of buildings. As a result, buildings must now incorporate advanced insulation and HVAC systems and complete performance testing on finished HVAC and air barrier systems. Atlas offers the following services which are designed to help architects and contractors comply with these new code requirements:

  • 2009 IECC Code Compliance Testing (Blower Door and Duct Leakage)
  • Insulation Installation Inspections and Consulting
  • Performance Testing of Closed and Open Cell Foam Assemblies
  • Manual J, D, and S Calculations for HVAC System Design
  • ASHRAE 62.2 Ventilation System Design

"The (Atlas Home Energy) auditor found energy problems in areas of my home that I didn't know we even had! After the inspection they took the time to meet with my husband for over an hour to show us how to fix all of the problems. Throughout the whole process I felt like they truly cared about our home!"
